Harvey Weinstein has enlisted the services of Bill Cosby’s legal counsel to handle his rape and assault conviction in Los Angeles, where he was found guilty and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Weinstein, who gained notoriety as a sexual predator in October 2017 following investigations by the New York Times and the New Yorker, which catalyzed the #MeToo movement, has hired Michael Freedman and Jennifer Bonjean as his lead legal representatives. Bonjean successfully overturned Bill Cosby’s rape conviction in Pennsylvania in 2021 based on a legal technicality. Cosby, a disgraced comedian accused by over 60 individuals of sexual assault, was released from prison after serving two years of a 3-to-10-year sentence.

Bonjean has built a reputation for defending high-profile figures implicated in the #MeToo movement, including R&B artist R. Kelly, who was convicted on charges of sexual and child abuse in 2022, and Keith Raniere, the leader of the Nxivm sex cult, who received a 120-year prison sentence in October 2020.
Her law firm’s website emphasizes Bonjean’s dedication to overturning the convictions of innocent individuals who have been wrongfully incarcerated. She will now represent Weinstein not only in his criminal case but also in his civil suit against Evgeniya Chernyshova, whose testimony about assault and rape by Weinstein in 2013 contributed to his conviction in Los Angeles. Chernyshova filed a civil suit seeking compensation for physical and mental pain and suffering, loss of earnings, and the cost of medical and psychological treatment resulting from the assault.
Weinstein, currently serving his New York prison sentence of 23 years for rape since 2020, is also appealing his conviction in New York. He is incarcerated at the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome, New York, which is a medium-security prison for men.
